Geelong Dance Movement Staff

Nikki Hyland- Director

Nikki has been teaching dancing in the Geelong area for over 10 years. Nikki has extensive training as a dancer, including at Broadway Dance Centre in New York and Dance Factory, Melbourne. She loves to share her passion for dancing with her students and help kids explore what their bodies are capable of.

Sofia – Studio Manager and Dance Teacher

Sofia is a young dance professional with an eclectic background of cultures and styles. While she was born in Mexico City, the majority of her formative dance training took place in Houston, Texas, over the course of 8 years of competitive dance. During that time, she received training in ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, hip-hop, and musical theatre. In January of 2016 she moved back home to Mexico to continue her training internationally and spent three years as an active member of both the commercial and contemporary dance communities in Mexico City, working and training primarily at World Beat Studio and La Cantera (Contemporary Dance Centre). In June of 2019, she relocated to Australia to complete a teaching certification through the Australian College of Dance. Her movement focuses are primarily on anatomical alignment, musicality, proprioception, and expression. Check out her work as an artist through her website/online portfolio:

Tayla – Dance Teacher at GDM

Tayla grew up in the small town of Ararat, Victoria where she began dancing at age 10. From the very first moment she stepped foot into the studio she fell completely in love with dance and having the space to move, breathe, and create art. Her favourite styles have always been Neo-Classical Ballet and Lyrical. However, Classical Ballet, Contemporary, and Jazz will always have a special place in Tayla’s heart. When she’s not dancing, Tayla is a full-time Chemistry student at Deakin University (which she loves almost as much as dancing). She decided to become a dance teacher because dance has had a profoundly positive effect on her views, values, and general development into adulthood, which was largely due to the amazing dedication of her own teachers. She learned so much from them and now loves to share the gift of dance with others in the same way they did with her. She has a natural way of relating to kids of all ages and heaps of fun during her classes.

Megan Barry – Dance Teacher at GDM

Amanda – Dance Teacher at GDM

Amanda is currently in her final year of her Bachelor of Music Theatre at Federation University’s Arts Academy. Whilst studying there, she has been extensively trained in jazz, tap and ballet from some of the industry’s leading professionals. Outside of university, Amanda has also performed in many local theatre productions in Geelong. Her recent credits include Mamma Mia, Les Miserables, Beauty and the Beast, Heathers, Wicked, Mary Poppins and Legally Blonde. Other teaching experience includes being a student teacher at the Geelong Academy of Performing Arts for four years helping with the tinies and sub junior theatrical classes. Amanda has a strong passion for solid ballet technique as she herself spent much of her time dancing in ballet classes. She was trained in the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus and encourages all of her students to give ballet a go as it can help with every other style of dance. She has also been trained in other styles of dance such as contemporary, lyrical, acrobatics and partnering/pas de deux.

Amanda currently teaches our Saturday Armstrong Creek classes and she loves seeing all of her students smiling faces each week.
